About the Author
Max McLean was born in Panama City, Panama and came to America via New York harbor and the Statue of Liberty at the age of four. The first thing he had to do was master the English language. Due to his father’s military career, "home" included many places across the continental United States, the Far East and Europe.

Max’s entry into theater began at the University of Texas. In an attempt to overcome a fear of public speaking, he took a course in oral interpretation. For the first time he experienced the power of the spoken word. Though he had no idea what he wanted to say, he knew he wanted to say it well.

After receiving his degree in history, he acted and directed for American troops in West Germany and then entered London’s Mountview Theater School. It was there that he began to train his voice and body to physically and vocally interpret text and find dramatic truth.

While in West Germany, at the suggestion of a woman who later become his wife, Max attended a small Bible study on the book of Galatians. By the third study, he discovered "spiritual truth." Compelled by an overwhelming sense of God’s presence, Max acknowledged his dependence on Jesus Christ as savior and Lord of the Universe. It was in that Bible study that the Lord had introduced him to the Word he would speak. In time God would give Max the conviction to present it boldly.

After several years of performing at theaters including the Royal Lyceum in Edinburgh, Scotland; Riverside Shakespeare Festival in New York; and Olympia Dukakis’s Whole Theater, Max found acting unfulfilling. He realized that "an actor is nothing more than a hired hand. His job is to brilliantly communicate other people’s ideas—regardless of his own feelings about them."

Aware of the fact that "you cannot serve two masters," Max left the theater not knowing where the Lord would direct him. To fill the void he became active in his local church. Moved deeply by the Word of God, Max began to study it closely. Great preachers and teachers inspired him. Aroused by what he learned, Max started to apply his acting skills to present and interpret books of the Bible. His memorized presentations had an immediate and profound impact.

Since 1983 making the Bible come alive for audiences has become his life’s work. The Lord has provided thousands of opportunities to present the Bible in various denominations from Roman Catholic to Reformed Presbyterian; Episcopalian to Assembly of God; Southern Baptist to Greek Orthodox; at universities such as Brown, Duke, Johns Hopkins, and Smith; and theaters such as the Stratford Festival Theatre in Stratford, Ontario; Lamb’s Theater in New York; Pegasus Players in Chicago, and the Kalita Humphreys Theater of the Dallas Theater Center.

He has performed Scripture for millions of people from across the religious and cultural spectrum and has been featured in such diverse publications as Moody magazine and the New York Times. On radio Max can be heard on the daily program Scripture as Told by Max McLean that airs on more than 550 radio affiliates worldwide.

Max makes his home in Morristown, New Jersey with his wife and two daughters.
