Ukraine Leading Software Outsourcing Destination
Many factors have helped establish the Ukraine as a leading destination for outsourcing of IT projects:
Ukrainian IT students have been winning international contests. Students of the Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics were the first place winners of the International Web Development Contest (I.C.W.D.I.C. 2005) held by XITEX Software Company in spring 2005.
Market Visio estimates the volume of Ukrainian IT-services export to be about $150 million in 2005, more than doubled from three years earlier. The number of IT professionals in the Ukraine is estimated at 10,000 programmers in 2003. Many of them work as freelancers, or for about 300 public companies in major cities such as Kyiv, Donetsk, Kharkiv, and Dnipropetrovsk.
Many European countries are encouraging Ukrainian programmers to come to the European Union and work there. Germany is a leading employer of Ukrainian IT professionals.
The cost of labor in the Ukraine for programmers continues to be low, around $10-$15 an hour, or $20,000 to $30,000 a year. This is approximately 30% less expensive than Russian programmers, and slightly more expensive than Indian programmers.
