Dealing with problems deploying the C runtime and MFC runtime with [Visual Studio 2005]?Create
By Garnet
When you see the error This applicaiton has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect for an application on Windows 2003, look at the System Event Log viewer.
You may see a group of three errors for this:
- Error 1:
- Source: SideBySide?Create
- Category: None
- Event ID: 59
- "Generate Activation Context failed for c:\shared\app\app.exe. Reference error message: The referenced assembly is not installed on your system."
- Error 2:
- Source: SideBySide?Create
- Category: None
- Event ID: 59
- "Resolve PArtial Assembly failed for Microsoft.VC80.DebugCRT?Create. Reference error message: The referenced assembly is not installed on your system."
- Error 3:
- Source: SideBySide?Create
- Category: None
- Event ID: 32
- "Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC80.DEbugCRT?Create could not be found and Last Error was The referenced assembly is not installed on your system.
These point you to exactly the file that the application can't find.

Copying the c:\program files\microsoft visual studio 8\vc\redist\x86
\Microsoft.vc80.crt
\Microsoft.vc80.mfc
as folders in the folder that holds the application.exe.
Now event log complains "Syntax error in manifest or policy file "c:\appdir\Microsoft.VC80.CRT\Microsoft.VC80.CRT.Manifest on line 11".
Nothing in google on this:
- "Syntax error in manifest or policy" VC80
Try the debug version of the program, and include the directories under c:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\VC\redist\Debug_NonRedist?Create\x86 into the application directory. This will run on other machines (except you're not supposed to redistribute the debug version of the libraries.)
