A: That is a good question. From my experience, here are the reasons:
Ebay's auction fees, charged whether or not an item sells, can eat a bookseller alive. At 40 cents each, selling one book out of ten at a $4 profit makes no money at all for the seller.
Last time I tried it, marketplace was free for items that dont sell.
Ebay listings are only for a week, or ten days max. If it doesn't sell, there are some semi-complicated rules that might let you list it a second time and get a refund of the fees for one of the two listings.
A marketplace listing last for 60 days. It is relatively easily to renew the items for a longer period.
It's probably more involved to put together an ebay ad that it is to enter an item into the Marketplace system.
A plethora of payment methods, plus paypal's many ways to mess around with seller and freeze acocunts, makes ebay auction payments complicated and risky to manage.
Marketplace buyers are simply billed by Amazon like for any other purchase from Amazon. The money is sent simply by EFT to the sellers bank account.
Both Amazon and Ebay charge a percentage of the final sales price of the item.
One of the draw backs of the MarketPlace?Create program are the sellers that can afford to sell books for 1 cent. Somehow, apparently they are able to afford the time to deal with shipping an order for a profit of just a few cents of the shipping fees. If you have books to sell that are already being offered for a penny, I am not sure if it is even worth it to take the time to add your copy of the same book to the list.
When Katherine Hepburn died, I found over 200 copies of her book listed in Marketplace, many for sale for only a penny.
Half.com might offer an alternative to ebay that is less expensive.
