Riding The Singapore Trains And The Rules

‘’Jan 2007 by Garnet ’’

So we went over to Singapore on a rainy day and after our bus landed at a large shopping mall / train station, we then rode the trains to some random place reputed to have a really good mall of electronics shops. I later noticed buses wrapped in advertisements for the Sim Lim mall, so it must be good…. The trains were really nice, everything was very officious. One of the train workers was better than a concierge, he explained all the attractions we might want to go to near different stops, including the Sim Lim station. After we’d left him and walked up to the train platform, even ran after us to offer us additional brochures along with profuse apologies for not giving us the literature sooner.
And there were plenty of signs around threatening with S$500 – S$1000 fines for various things like chewing gum or smoking in prohibited places. (That’s about 1/4th of an educated workers monthly pay). I started having fun on escalators and hallways using an announcer’s voice to remind everyone of any rules I saw posted….

Oh, and the train stations had great training videos running a video giving training on exactly the kinds of steps to take if you want to try and leave an unattended bag with a bomb on the train. Oh yeah, and also how to train the other riders how to spot this and what to do. Really very exciting, kind of like having a reality TV show on all the time…. I then made sure upon entering trains and while riding to really take careful looks at everyone on the trains, gotta follow the rules, when in Singapore do as the Singaporean….
