Open Source ROMs Needed for Color Laser Printers

Open source operating systems are needed for color laser printers to combat the problem of manufacturers hiding secret codes in documents without telling consumers.

Though often dismissed as an urban legend, Mr. Weinstein said that he spoke to a Xerox official in 1999 who confirmed the presence of the codes as a measure against possible counterfeiting attempts
  • Printers also include other anti-counterfeiting measures, such as dumping extra cyan toner onto images when the unit believes it has detected an attempt to specifically copy currency, said Mr. Weinstein.
