- [Wildcat Clones Give Scientists Hope of Saving Species]
- (05/18/04)—The Audubon Center for Research of Endangered Species in New Orleans has successfully cloned endangered male and female African wildcats. The female wildcat clones, named Caty and Madge, were born via Caesarean section because the scientists "don't want to take the chance that the mother is going to turn on them." Two clones males were born in November 2003. The work was done following a breakthrough at Louisiana State University and the cloning of the world's first wild carnivore, an African wildcat named Ditteaux, born on Aug. 6, 2003. Other significant breakthroughs involve successful animal births after interspecies frozen-thawed embryo transfer using a domestic female cat as the mother surrogate. The other cloned wildcats also have domestic cat surrogate mothers.
- There are only 23 species of small, exotic cats, and according to Dr. Betsy Dresser, "the African wildcat is one that represents a lot of these other cats."
