Health News For December 6 2004
Canadian researchers today released an amazing study claiming that women who are pregnant with twins, triplets, or quadruplets are almost 13 more times likely to experience complications to their pregancies.
Complications from carrying twins, triplets, or quadruplets can include:
The leader of the study, Dr. Mark Walker, a scientist with the Ottawa Health Research Institute was surprised by results: "Thes are young healthy women in the reproductive age window of 16 to 44 where you wouldn't expect to see these health problems."
His surprise prompted him to give some common sense advice concerning pregnant women: "If the mother has leg pain, shortness of breath or chest pain, our urgency to look into other problems should be increased."
He added, concerning in-vitro fertilizations that result in multiple births, "Here's one more reason to develop techniques to ensure that only one baby results from the procedure. I may lose my business as an obstetrician, but it's absolutely safer to have one baby, then wait nine months to have another."
Nanny states in Europe have already legislated a limit of implanting a maximum of two embryos, regardless of the age of the mother. Dr. Jeff Haeve a reproductive endocrinologist at the University of Ottawa felt that legislation to control his activities to make sure he doesn't get carried away implanting too many fetuses is "a very good way of handing the problem of multiple births."
