The prank deceived some of the nation's biggest media companies. On April 1, the Art Bell web site was made to appear that it had been hacked by anti-NATO Serbian hackers. It headlined, "Belgrade Hackers Rule!! We have your site!...and "The Yugoslav Citizens' Message To NATO War Criminals."
Actually the cyber warfare was a fake posted by the Art Bell's own web team. MSNBC, the BBC, Newsbytes, the Drudge Report ...and others were either duped or questioned on the airwaves whether the site was actually hacked. It resulted in a lot of free publicity for the Art Bell talk show.
The Clinton 1999 budget contains nearly $1.5 billion to protect critical computer systems from cyber and other attacks.
