A Race Against Time In Aceh[Mercy Malaysia] was the first international aid organization on the scene in Aceh. Others too have arrived. The US Navy has sent its helicopters to distribute food. The Germans have set up a field hospital there. And the Australians too are sending aid.
The UN emergency aid coordinator Jan Egeland announced live over CNN on New Years Day that Malaysia may be used as the airborne hub to springboard relief aid to Acheh. Although no official announcement has been made by the Malaysian government or other governments have been made at the time of writing, this would be a welcome move. Banda Acehs facilities are apparently overstretched. Malaysia's proximity to Aceh, and the fact that its facilities are intact, should make a fully coordinated UN operation possible. Helicopters and other aircraft would be needed to refuel and take the necessary aid to many parts of Aceh, currently not accessible by road. We do need this Asian [Berlin Airlift] if the affected people of Indonesia are to be helped.
